The systems create a folder on the user’s PC or laptop which are then synchronised to the host’s servers (either One Drive or Dropbox) and then to others users on the same user account. So, as long as you have internet access you can edit and share documents with everyone in the company from wherever you are. Different permissions can be set so only certain users can access certain documents. A limitation to this service is you can’t run software on it. It is merely a simple file sharing service.

Remote Desktop Connection

Another way to work remotely is using Remote Desktop Connection. Using this method you can connect to a computer from another computer connected to the same network or to the Internet. For example, you can use all of your work PC’s programs and files from your home machine, and it’s just like you’re sitting in front of your computer at work. You have to make sure your computer in the office is turned on before being able to connect remotely. There are also a number of settings that need to be put in place but your IT support company can handle this.

VPN (Virtual Private Network)

A remote connection we regularly set up for our customers is a VPN. This method is similar to Remote Desktop Connection but can give the user secure server access. There is a greater level of security when using VPN. You’ll find this method being used by businesses that have a server at head office and have satellite offices remoting in. With server level access, you need greater security.
